Illa d’en Colom

The largest island of Menorca

La Illa d’en Colom is only 200 meters from the north coast of Menorca, but this separation is enough to make it a refuge that can only be accessed from the sea, which makes it a secluded and quiet place to enjoy a few hours of calm away from the bustle that prevails in other areas of the island during the summer months.

The small islet is located northeast of the picturesque village of Es Grau, and has two pristine beaches on its west coast: Arenal d’en Moro and the beach of Els Tamarells where its fine sand (which has nothing to do with the usual beaches of the north) and its biodiversity stand out. Both are protected from the strong north winds.

In the shallow southern area, there are small rocks that can be dangerous if you try to approach the coast by boat. Its southwestern tip is called Punta Des Macs, while the southeastern one is known as Bóu I Sa Vaca.

The east side of the island is rocky, with high cliffs, where we find the Cao de Llevant, while to the north is located the Cap Mestral. Both join at a small sea inlet known as Sa Mitjalluna.

In the 59 hectares of land that make up this island (and that make it the largest in Menorca), we find one of the most unspoiled places in Menorca and also one of the most protected. Framed by the natural park of the Albufera d’es Grau (whose more than five thousand hectares were declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1993 by UNESCO), this place offers an incredible and varied sample of the fauna and flora of the island of Menorca.

From its vegetation (mostly Tamarind and Ullastre), to its seabed that houses large meadows of posidonia (where we can appreciate the small reefs that form in some areas and the organisms that inhabit its waters such as sponges or anemones), Illa d’en Colom offers landscapes with endless colors and textures.

An unparalleled experience for those who enjoy water sports such as snorkeling and scuba diving and an unparalleled landscape for nature lovers in general.

A property that has been for sale for 30 years

Illa d’en Colom was originally an island used as a lazaretto. That is to say, as was the case with the island of Llatzaret, it was used as a sanitary enclosure for the quarantine of sailors who were suspected of being carriers of contagious diseases.

However, it later became a private property (a role it retains today). As part of it, we find a small farm and a summer house of about 100 square meters built in the eighteenth century. But also a 135-meter wooden cabin that, curiously, is part of the Albufera reserve and is therefore protected by the same legislation and cannot be modified or reformed.

This place was acquired by Antonio Roca Várez in 1904, who acquired the property for 7,850 pesetas. Almost a century later, in 2016, it tried to sell for more than 5 million euros although, finally, the estate did not manage to be sold until 2018, when businessman Victor Madera bought it for a whopping 3’7 million.

Colom’s lizards: the Menorcan symbol par excellence

If you have visited the souvenir stores in Menorca, you will have noticed that it is common to see a lizard drawn on the countless objects displayed in their stores.

The so-called “Balearic lizard” (or Podarcis Lilfordi Balearica) is a species of reptile that inhabited, in ancient times, the Balearic Islands. With the passage of time, and especially as a consequence of the introduction of other predatory species by the Romans, their population was considerably reduced and even disappeared from the larger islands where they were once commonly found.

At present, it is only possible to find small isolated groups of this reptile in some parts of the islands, especially on the islets and more remote areas (where the impact caused by the human footprint is less).

Illa d’en Colom is one of those privileged places where the stronghold of a population of these curious lizards that were once regular inhabitants of all the Balearic Islands is still preserved.

Illa d’en Colom in Menorca, how to get there?

To access the Isla d’en Colom it is necessary to cross the sea, so it is impossible to reach it exclusively by car or on foot. However, we can approach it by road to Es Grau.

In this sense, we can reach it by public transportation, taking the line of bus 23 (which departs from Mahón station and stops at Es Grau), or we can take the car or motorcycle taking the Me-7 from Mahón and turning off as soon as possible on the Me-5 towards Es Grau.

If what we prefer is to enjoy an outdoor route, we can reach this village following the Camí de Cavalls (by bike or on foot). Departing from Mahón, the estimated travel time is about 3 hours, during which we will visit Sa Mesquida (with its beautiful beach and the 18th century defense tower that presides over it) and we will head towards the pebble beach of Binillautí, whose path will offer us unforgettable views of this part of the Minorcan coast. From here, we will continue until we find the Es Grau road that will take us directly to the entrance of the lagoon.

Once we are in Es Grau, we can cross to the Illa d’en Colom in different ways.

Without going any further, we can go swimming, in which case we should always do it with a buoy that indicates our position and, if possible, avoid the Baix d’es Pas because, although following this path we are only 200 meters away from the island, the many boats that sail in this area make it an unadvisable option.

We can also do the tour by kayak , which is probably one of the easiest, cheapest and also one of the most fun options. There are many companies available for rent and it is incredibly easy to get to the island on one of them.

The Illa d’en Colom is only 1.5 km from Es Grau (and is visible from this point, so it is very difficult to get lost on the route). This route is about 20 minutes by kayak to Cala Els Tamarells, and 5 minutes more if we want to visit the next beach (Arenal d’en Moro).

The boat is, without a doubt, the most comfortable option since, if we decide to rent a boat, it will allow us to leave from the port of origin and arrive directly to the islet without the need to stop or change means of transportation. In any case, if we prefer, there is also a boat-taxi available that makes continuous trips from Es Grau to the island.

NO NEARBY SERVICES*.

What to do in Illa d’en Colom?

On this island, secluded from civilization and converted into a private residence for its privileged owner, there are no services available.

However, its proximity to Es Grau means that we can enjoy all the amenities that this small town offers and, at the same time, schedule fun activities that we can do on the charming islet.

Of course, enjoying its pristine beaches is one of the greatest attractions offered by Colom, but to get there, we must plan our journey.

One of the most common options (and also one of the most attractive) for those who wish to visit the island, is to schedule a kayak excursion, which will allow us to enjoy a different and very fun plan, suitable for all audiences.

The kayak trip to the island is very simple because, from Es Grau, it is possible to see its coasts (so the chances of getting disoriented along the way are minimal, if not nil). The journey from Es Grau is about 20 minutes and involves 1.5 km to reach the nearest beach (Els Tamarells beach) and 5 minutes more if we want to get to Arenal d’en Moro.

If we are very motivated and we want to continue our kayaking route, we can extend the tour and reach the beaches of the coast of Menorca: Tamarells Nord and Tamarells Sud beaches. However, this will mean an additional 2 hours of travel time (time that you will have to take into account when calculating the hours of daylight you have available to make the journey).

If you dare to reach this point you can visit the base of the Rambla Tower (an English defense tower that can be found in the Rambla cape).

Of course, you can also arrive on the island and simply relax on its shores planning to spend a quiet day of sun and beach. Or, if you feel like it, take the opportunity to practice some marine sport such as snorkeling because, if you are a sea lover, the landscape offered by its waters and the marine life that hides among the posidonia of the place, will allow you to enjoy an unparalleled spectacle.

How to get to Illa d’en Colom by boat?

To access the Illa d’en Colom by boat, we must leave the port of Mahón heading SE, leaving the dock to starboard. We will continue through the port until we reach the open sea (up to Punta de Sant Carles).

At this point, we will leave the San Carlos lighthouse to starboard, and continue to port along the coast (heading NE) where we will pass La Mola and Punta de S’Espero, to continue in a NW direction (always sailing with the coast to port).

We will pass Cap Negre, Punta de Sa Galera and, finally, Punta de sa Cudia. To port we will see an inlet through which Es Grau is accessed and in front we will have Illa d’en Colom (which we will have to skirt to the N to anchor on its NW side).
