Arenal d’en Moro Beach

A lonely paradise very close to Es Grau

Arenal d’en Moro is a small virgin beach of white sand located in the northwestern part of the Illa d’en Colom (the largest island within the Minorcan geography). Its access is only by sea, which makes it a place with little traffic and the people who come to its coast, usually come from the boats anchored nearby.

The privileged natural environment in which it is located (framed by the Albufera des Grau Natural Park) offers unparalleled landscapes both in and out of the water. In this sense, its seabed stands out, whose crystalline waters allow us to appreciate an immense variety of underwater species that live in the area and hide among the posidonia of the place.

A perfect place to snorkel and soak (never better said) of the biodiversity that the island of Menorca harbors in its interior.

Arenal d’en Moro in Menorca, how to get there?

Since this beach is located on an islet (Illa d’en Colom) and its access is exclusively by sea, it will be necessary to take a means of transport that allows us to cross the waters that separate Arenal d’en Moro from the nearest coastal place: Es Grau.

First of all, to get to Es Grau we can choose to go by road (either by car or motorcycle), take public transport* (bus line 23, which leaves from Mahón and stops in this village) or follow the Camí de Cavalls route that leads to Es Grau (which can be done by bike or on foot).

We invite you to visit the entries related to Es Grau or Illa d’en Colom, where you will find more precise indications on how to do this part of the route, choosing any of the mentioned ways.

Once in Es Grau we will have to cross to the Illa d’en Colom for which we can choose between swimming to the beach d’Arenal d’en Moro (always carrying a buoy that locates our position and taking care not to get too close to the boats that anchor in the area), or go kayaking.

The kayak route is extremely easy to do, as the illa d’en Colom is perfectly visible from the coast of Es Grau, and the trip takes only 25 minutes to reach the Arenal d’en Moro beach.

Of all of them, the most comfortable option is probably to rent a boat that allows you to get to the beach itself without having to take several means of transportation on the way. In any case, if we prefer, there is also a boat-taxi available to get from Es Grau to the islet where our beach is located.

What to see near Arenal d’en Moro beach?

The most common plan among those who dare to visit its beach is to enjoy a nice day at the beach, sunbathe and relax letting ourselves get caught by its beautiful scenery.

However, for those who wish to do some other activity, you can find options such as snorkeling or kayaking to practice in its waters.

As we mentioned before, the underwater landscape offered by Arenal d’en Moro beach, which is surrounded by the natural park of S’Albufera des Grau (Biosphere Reserve since 1993) is ideal for those sea lovers who like to explore the environment.

The kayak routes, on the other hand, not only allow the displacement between Es Grau and the Illa d’en Colom, but also allow some sightseeing to know the nearby beaches: from Tamarells (located in the Illa d’en Colom itself, just 5 minutes by kayak from Arenal d’en Moro), to areas of the Minorcan coast as Tamarells Nord and Tamarells Sud (two beautiful beaches for which we will have to make a journey of approximately 2 hours from Arenal).

We can also take a walk around the Illa d’en Colom itself where, enjoying a short walk, we will inspect the nooks and crannies hidden inside. Although the roads are not specifically prepared for this purpose, it is possible to walk around the island and see the buildings on it: a rustic farm, a summer house and an old protected hut (as it is considered part of the natural park).

Although none of them can be visited (as they are part of the private property of the businessman who acquired the area in 2018), we can walk around them and also enjoy the vegetation and fauna that inhabits the island such as reptiles or birds of prey and waterfowl. In this regard, a lizard that was very common in the Balearic Islands in ancient times (commonly known as the Balearic lizard) stands out, as well as the osprey and the common coot.

For ornithology lovers, Arenal d’en Moro beach (and Illa d’en Colom in general) will be, without any doubt, a wonderful place to discover and, an obligatory stop during your visit to the island of Menorca.

How to get to Arenal d’en Moro beach by boat?

To reach the Arenal d’en Moro beach by boat, we must leave the port of Mahón heading SE, leaving the dock to starboard. We will continue through the port until we reach the open sea (up to Punta de Sant Carles).

At this point, we will leave the San Carlos lighthouse to starboard, and continue to port along the coast (heading NE) where we will pass La Mola and Punta de S’Espero, to continue in a NW direction (always sailing with the coast to port).

We will pass Cap Negre, Punta de Sa Galera and, finally, Punta de sa Cudia. On the port side we will see an inlet that leads to Es Grau and in front we will have Illa d’en Colom. We will have to border it to the N to anchor in the SW of the island, where the Arenal d’en Moro beach is located.
