Cala des Murtar
A fishing cove
In this old village on the north coast of Menorca, it is possible to find some fishermen’s houses and small buildings, a modest pier full of small boats and a cove with a rocky bottom called, in honor of the village, Cala des Murtar.
Although it is not an area of great affluence of bathers (and, in fact, it is more an area of fishermen authorized, in addition, for the practice of recreational fishing), it has on one of its sides with concrete platforms and a diving board to jump into its waters, as well as a ladder to get out of them.
Together with Sa Mesquida, Es Murtar is the other large fishing village in the municipality of Mahón. They began by building scattered houses in the area, which multiplied without order or order, and ended up becoming an unexpected summer colony.
And when we say “summery”, we mean it literally, because Es Murtar is not an appropriate place to spend the winters, which are especially inhospitable in the region. So, when the tramontana blows and temperatures drop, the villagers close their homes and flee to Mahón, where the inclemencies of the colder months are less noticeable and life goes on.

Cala des Murtar in Menorca, how to get there?
To arrive at Es Murtar by road from Mahón we will have to circulate by Ronda de Maó until arriving at the traffic circle in which the Me-3 appears indicated. There, we will have to take the second exit in this direction.
We will continue along the Me-3 towards Sa Mesquida / Cala Llonga, until we find, on our left, the detour to Carretera Sa Mesquida. Then turn right towards Carretera Es Murtar and continue straight on towards Camí de Dalt until you reach your destination.
Although there is the possibility of parking in the area, the available space is limited so it is advisable to park as soon as we arrive at the urbanization of Es Murtar.

What to see near Cala es Murtar?
As we mentioned in the description, this cove is not exactly the favorite of swimmers and, although it is true that the platforms and stairs to access the water make it very comfortable, we will not find in Es Murtar the filmy beaches for which Menorca is characterized.
Normally this cove is not visited for its beaches, but for its endearing landscape of typical white houses and little boats rocking in its waters.
How to get to Cala des Murtar by boat?
To get to Cala des Murtar by boat, we will leave the port of Mahón heading SE. We will leave Illa del Rei to port and continue sailing until we reach the open sea.
Following the coastline, we will turn to port (leaving Punta de Sant Carles at the stern) and continue ascending in a northeasterly direction until Punta de s’Espero, which we will have to leave behind to port, to continue the route without ever losing sight of the coast of the island.
We will continue in a NW direction until we pass Cap Negre and, further on, we will find Cala des Murtar on the port side.
