Sa Caleta

A very familiar beach

This small urban beach is very close to the center of Ciutadella. With a beach bar and picnic tables, it is a perfect option to spend the whole day. Family atmosphere and calm sea, a perfect plan for your vacation.

Located between Torre des Casteller and Cala Santandria, we find Sa Caleta (also known as Sa Caleta d’en Gorries). It is a beach with lifeguard service in high season, a beach bar on the beachfront, picnic tables, bus stop without having to walk extra meters, as the line 65 towards Ciutadella leaves you on the beach, and even a soccer field. It is not a beach that tends to be very frequented beyond the people who live or stay in nearby areas.

The most characteristic of this cove is its familiar atmosphere, the frequent absence of waves, its light and pleasant breeze, the sandy slope, its shallow depth for several meters from the shore to the inside, the delicate slope in contrast to the steep, but not very high cliffs of the coast, adorned by the vegetation of the island. Its transparent waters and panoramic view will dazzle you, as well as the thousands of people who visit this cove every year. If you want to spend a quiet day at the beach with your family, Sa Caleta is the perfect place for you.

Sa Caleta in Menorca, how to get there?

To reach the small paradise of Sa Caleta by car, leave Ciutadella by the southern ring road in the direction of Sa Caleta/Santandria. You must pass Son Oleu, when you see the Hotel Blanc Palace, continue straight on until you reach the fork at the Son Blacn Cottage apartments, where you must take the path on the left, go down the slope and look for parking. The beach is right next door.

If you are coming from a town other than Ciutadella, take the road towards Ciutadella until you reach the traffic circle at the entrance, where the ITV is located, and take the third exit towards the Ronda Sur. Straight on until you reach the sixth traffic circle, where you must also take the third exit heading south. From here you can follow the indications we have given before, you will arrive without loss and in no time.

Sa Caleta can also be reached by following the well-known Camí de Cavalls, a historical route where King Jaume II placed his soldiers on horseback to defend the coastline.

If you want to take the bus* to Sa Caleta, line 65 will take you directly. The route includes the Artrutx Santandria lighthouse, Sa Caleta, Ciutadella and Cala en Bosch. This line offers you the possibility to organize a full day of sightseeing, starting with visits to Ciudadela and the beautiful old town, the coves that are on its route as Sa Caleta and Artrutx Lighthouse.

In addition, thanks to the orography of the seabed, anchoring for small and medium-sized boats is permitted in this area. Its sea floor is sandy, there is no danger of dangerous shallows, even allowing stranding in areas close to the shore. The usual and most recommended is to anchor in Cala Santandria, which is next door, seven hectometers long and two wide, 3.5 miles to Cabo d’Artrutx and although it is at the mercy of the wind currents from the west, it is more sheltered from the air currents.

If you have the possibility to rent a boat in Sa Caleta or you have one, enjoy with your family and friends a splendid day at the beach, the conditions of Sa Caleta are the best for this plan.

Services near Sa Caleta

Things you will love about this beach: it has a beach bar. Things that you may not like so much, the beach bar is small (both inside and outside), only has about 7 or 8 tables and the kitchen has reduced space, so in high season the food service may not always be a success. However, you can always refresh yourself with a cold drink or an ice cream, or even order a snack to replenish your strength and return to the water, or take a nice nap on the sand.

If there is no room at the beach bar, which is common in high season, or if you prefer to eat at a nearby restaurant, there is a wide gastronomic offer in the surrounding area. For example, the restaurant Cova Sa Nacra, a place acclaimed by critics for its beautiful facilities and exquisite food, all agree that it is a place to go without fail. The best option always in Menorca is to book in advance if it is summer, especially if you are going with a large group of people, you will save time and you will be able to enjoy more the day at the beach.

If you like coastal food, Menorca will make you fall in love with its typical lobster stew. You can’t miss it!

COVA SA NACRA

This restaurant, specialized in Mediterranean cuisine, stands out for its delicious rice and seafood dishes. Located in an old cave, its renovation has resulted in a cozy restaurant, with a terrace with stunning views, and a curious decoration with figures carved into the rocky walls of the cave in which it is housed.

What to see near Sa Caleta

In this beach the most common plans are the cooler, shovels and enjoy Sa Caleta as it is a very quiet and family beach. However, there are other alternatives that you may find very interesting. For example, you can visit the adjoining cove, Cala Santandria, as it is very close and wider.

You could also go hiking following the paths of the Camí de Cavalls, since Sa Caleta is within one of its routes. The views are spectacular and it is a different and enriching way to see the coast of Menorca, so do not miss it if you are interested in hiking, because it is highly recommended.

This beach has permission for nautical activities, you can rent jet skis and tour the line of coves in the southwest of Menorca, alone or accompanied and enjoy a good adrenaline rush.

For other types of plans such as snorkeling, diving or cliff jumping, there are other coves in Menorca that meet better physical conditions for this type of activities, take a look at the map and see which one best suits your plans to make the most of your vacation.

One of the curiosities of this beach is that in the sand there are two goals to play soccer in the same access area. It is not a professional soccer field, but it is a good place to play a game with friends or family, having a good time with your family.

The dip afterwards will leave you with the best taste in your mouth and, without a doubt, you will remember Sa Caleta as one of the best beaches you have ever visited.

How to get to Sa Caleta by boat?

To reach Sa Caleta by boat, we must leave the port of Mahón heading SE. We will sail along the coast, leaving Illa del Rei to port.

We will continue out to the open sea, leaving the Punta de Sant Carles lighthouse to starboard.

Following the coastline in a southerly direction we will pass the outcrops of Na Girada and Punta Rafalet. We will continue skirting the island, which will take us in a SW direction and leave Punta Prima and Punta dels Marbres to starboard. At this point we will have the Illa de l’Aire on our port side.

Following the coastline, we will head in a NW direction and ascend passing Cabo Binibeca, Illot d’en Marçal, Cap d’en Font, Cap de ses Penyes, Illot de Binicodrell, Punta de Macarella, Punta des Tambors… until we reach Cap d’Artrutx (at the SW end of the island).

From here we will ascend in a NE direction towards Punta des Pegre but, before reaching it, as soon as we pass Punta Quintana, we must begin to make the approach to the coast because, from here, we will soon find Sa Caleta to starboard (we will identify it because it is sheltered by a ledge that we will see from the bow of the boat when we pass Punta Quintana and that we will identify by the lighthouse that is located on that land).

In this inlet we will see several arms that go into the coast: one in a shorter and narrower N direction, one that ascends in a slightly larger NE direction, and one that is on the starboard side, which descends in a much wider and deeper SE direction than the previous ones. It is in the second one, the one that advances towards the NE where we will find the beach of Sa Caleta.
