Savinar de Mongofre

A wild cove

Mongofre cove is located on the north coast of Menorca and is divided into two separate areas: Savinar de Mongofre and s’Arenalet de Mongofre.

Within the first one we find, in turn, three small beaches of barely 40 meters long, separated from each other by small reefs. These beaches are practically imperceptible from land (as they are at the foot of the cliff that dominates the area), but we can find them on the port side if we come sailing in an E-W direction.

It is one of the wildest and most protected places on the island, due to its location and difficult access (which, in fact, is only possible from the sea, as it is either inaccessible from land or its access is restricted because it is part of a private property).

However, if we reach it by sea, we will see that there are numerous boats that drop anchor in its waters to enjoy its white sand, its clear waters and its beautiful natural environment.

Mongofre in Menorca, how to get there?

It is possible to reach it through the hacienda that bears its name, however, access is restricted because it is private property and we depend on being given permission to cross the farm. However, we can get there, without restrictions, following the Camí de Cavalls stage from Favàritx to Es Grau.

Starting from the lighthouse, we will find signs that clearly indicate the path to follow. Following the same, we will have to make a crossing of about 3.7 km to reach Mongofre. During the same, we will pass Cala Caldés where we will ascend by the blurred path that reaches Cala s’Enclusa and from there we will continue through the dunes and pine forests, until we find Mongofre.

As we mentioned before, and although it is possible to make the way on foot, the best option is, perhaps, to reach it by boat (due to the facilities and amenities offered by this means of access to the cove).

What to see near Mongofre?

There are no services available on the beach, but it offers, in itself, a wonderful plan to enjoy on any summer day (preferably if the Tramontana is not blowing).

Spending the day bathing in its waters, exploring the surroundings with its vegetation and wild aspect, or planning an excursion to walk (in part or in its entirety) the stage of the Camí de Cavalls in which Mongofre is located, are just some of the fun we can have in this privileged environment.

How to get to Mongofre by boat?

To get to Mongofre by boat, we will have to leave the port of Mahón in a SE direction, leaving the dock to starboard. We will continue through the port until we reach the open sea (up to Punta de Sant Carles).

At this point, we will leave the San Carlos lighthouse to starboard, and continue to port along the coast (heading NE). We will pass La Mola and Punta de S’Espero, to advance in a NW direction (always sailing with the coast to port).

We will pass Cap Negre, Punta de Sa Galera and, finally, Punta de sa Cudia. On the port side we will see an inlet that leads to Es Grau and in front we will have Illa d’en Colom. We will have to overcome it leaving it on the port side and continue in a NW direction until we pass the Cap de Mossen Vives and the Escull den Tortuga. From the bow we will see the Cap de Favàritx and its unmistakable lighthouse.

Skirting the Favàritx point, always close to the coast, we will sail in W direction to Punta de s’ Enclusa. Between this and Punta de ses Llenques (located south of the previous one) we will find s’Arenalet d’en Mongofre and then El Savinar.
