Tirant Cove

If you like surfing, you’ll want the tramontana to blow.

Cala Tirant is one of the largest sandy areas of the north coast in which stands out its golden terrain and the hill that separates the beach into two bathing areas.

The exposure of this cove to the north wind, its abundant and fine sand, and the peculiarities of the terrain (with its particular vegetation and rocky areas), facilitate the formation of dunes and allow Cala Tirant to have one of the largest dune systems in Menorca.

In addition to its dunes, this cove also stands out for the presence of wetlands between them, where much of the vegetation and aquatic species that dominate the region proliferate.

Despite the degradation of its dunes, Cala Tirant still has spectacular sandy bottoms and ideal conditions to enjoy a quiet swim in its waters, as long as it does not blow tramontana (in which case bathers leave the beach that is filled with surfers ready to enjoy the strong waves that reach the coast).

The importance of dune conservation

At present, many dunes in this and other regions are in the waning phase. The number of visitors and the lack of respect and care for the areas they inhabit, herald their imminent extinction. For this reason, actions are currently being promoted to protect them and implement measures aimed at their recovery.

As we have mentioned, Cala Tirant has one of the largest dune systems in Menorca, but why is its conservation so important? The dune systems constitute a natural protection for the conservation of the beaches where they are located. They serve as a reserve for their sandy areas and act as a protective barrier when storms threaten to make them disappear.

In other words: no dunes, no beaches.

How to get to Cala Tirant by boat?

To get to Cala Tirant by boat, we will have to leave the port of Mahón in a SE direction leaving the dock to starboard. We will continue through the port until we reach the open sea (up to Punta de Sant Carles).

At this point, we will leave the San Carlos lighthouse to starboard, and continue to port along the coast (heading NE) where we will pass La Mola and Punta de S’Espero, to continue in a NW direction (always sailing with the coast to port).

We will pass Cap Negre, Punta de Sa Galera and, finally, Punta de sa Cudia. On the port side we will see an inlet that leads to Es Grau and in front we will have Illa d’en Colom. We will have to overcome it leaving it on the port side and continue in a NW direction until we pass the Cap de Mossen Vives and the Escull den Tortuga. From the bow we will see the Cap de Favàritx and its unmistakable lighthouse.

Skirting the Favàritx point, we will sail in a NW direction until we see the Addaia islands. We will pass them leaving them to port and continue until we reach Punta Pantinat.

We will border it, without losing the coastline, until we find a deep inlet at the end of Punta Pantinet (between Punta des Morter and Cap de Fornells). We will pass it to port and sail in a SW direction, without losing sight of the coast, to find an inlet between Punta Llarga (which will be on the port side) and Punta Negra (on the starboard side). At the end of this inlet we will find Cala Tirant.
