Torta Cove

A practically unreachable cove

There are few places more secluded than Cala Torta. This rocky beach is off the beaten path and can only be enjoyed from the sea.

Located to the SE of the Cavallería peninsula and 10 km from Es Mercadal, it is located between the points of Sa Torre and des Vernís and is protected on its W side by the Cap de Sa Paret. From its coast, if we look to the distance, we can make out, in the distance, the Illa des Porros.

It is an unspoiled area of secluded and quiet character, with deep rocky bottoms where posidonia takes refuge. Its characteristics have led it to be awarded the title of Natural Reserve… as it could not be otherwise.

Cala Torta in Menorca, how to get there?

Access to it is not easy, neither by land nor by sea. By land because the terrain does not favor its reach, and by sea because its rocky bottoms where posidonia abounds are protected and it is difficult to find suitable places for anchoring.

If we want to make the approach by road, leaving Mahón, we must take the Me-7 heading NW to Camí de Tramuntana, where we will drive until we find on the right the detour to Ctra Camides Far. From here, it is time to walk.

What to see near Cala Torta?

The services in the area are non-existent (although if you have read its description, I am sure you have already deduced that). Even so, if we manage to get there, there are activities we can do on our own.

Its rocky posidonia seabed is ideal for diving and, if we dare to continue walking a little further, we will find interesting places to visit around it.

Without going any further, on the peninsula that separates Cala Torta from Sanitja, we can find the Tower of Sanitja, a defensive tower from the time of British rule on the island (back in the eighteenth century), used as a watchtower to prevent landings and incursions of enemy troops.

Currently this watchtower is in very bad condition due to the deterioration caused by the action of the wind and the sea, but that does not prevent us from making a small excursion and get to know it and see it from a safe distance (you know, in case it decides to collapse unexpectedly, better not to catch us snooping around inside).

How to get to Cala Torta by boat?

To reach Cala Torta by boat, we will have to leave the port of Mahón in a SE direction, leaving the dock to starboard. We will continue through the port until we reach the open sea (up to Punta de Sant Carles).

At this point, we will leave the San Carlos lighthouse to starboard, and continue to port along the coast (heading NE). We will pass La Mola and Punta de S’Espero, to advance in a NW direction (always sailing with the coast to port).

We will pass Cap Negre, Punta de Sa Galera and, finally, Punta de sa Cudia. On the port side we will see an inlet that leads to Es Grau and in front we will have Illa d’en Colom. We will have to overcome it leaving it on the port side and continue in a NW direction until we pass the Cap de Mossen Vives and the Escull den Tortuga. From the bow we will see the Cap de Favàritx and its unmistakable lighthouse.

Skirting the Favàritx point, we will sail in a NW direction until we see the Addaia islands. We will pass them on the port side and continue until we reach Punta Pantinat.

We will skirt it, and sail in a NW direction (leaving behind Punta de na Guillemassa and Punta des Morter) until we reach Cap de Cavallería. We will border it passing between Illa d’els Porros (which will be on the starboard side) and Illot des Pas (which will be on the port side).

Once past the channel between the two, we will descend in a southerly direction to Cala Torta, which we will see from the bow of the boat (between Punta de Sa Torre and Cap d’es Vernis).
