Cala des Talaier

The watchman’s beach

A small virgin cove of turquoise water and fine white sand, located next to the well-known Son Saura and 12 km from Ciudadela. A Menorcan corner where children will enjoy going into the sea without being covered by the water.

This beach is not surrounded by cliffs as high as those of Turqueta or Mascarella, so it has a cleaner view of the horizon. This is the reason why, in the past, it was used as a surveillance center and, in fact, is named after the watchtower d’Artrutx, built in 1617 in the area to prevent the arrival of pirates.

Cala des Talaier in Menorca, how to get there?

You can reach Cala Es Talaier by car from several points of Menorca.

If you want to leave from Mahón, and go by road, you must take the Me-1 and then join the RC-2. Leave the Ronda Sur 2 by Camí de Sant Joan de Missa, and if you follow the indications you will find, you will arrive at Cala des Talaier without any problem.

If you want to leave from Ciutadella, take the RC-2 towards Arenal de Son Saura, as it is the easiest way and the parking is free. When you get out of the car, you will have to walk about 1.3 km to Banyul beach, continue to Bellavista beach and from there to Es Talaier along a path that coincides with the Camí de Cavalls. A beautiful tour where the turquoise of its waters can be appreciated very well.

If you want to go by boat, in Menorca you will find plenty of offers to rent boats with or without license, with departures from the ports of Ciutadella or from the ports of Mahon, depending on your destination. If you want to visit Es Talaier cove, from Mahón the road is longer, and you will find numerous beaches before, but Es Talaier is a must-see spectacle.

What to see and do in Cala des Talaier

We already know that there are no services on this beach, but that does not mean that there is nothing to do.

Starting with the obvious, you can enjoy a pleasant, relaxing bathroom in its waters and, in addition, this beach has a great advantage: it does not accumulate remains of algae or aquatic plants so, if you are scrupulous with that kind of things, you can take a quiet bath, that here you will not have that problem.

On the other hand, its orography gives us two mini coves that, although they are not coves as such, offer us a more intimate area, away from the main cove, where we can enjoy the privacy of bathing (although not the sand, since these are rocky beaches).

In this area you can snorkel. If you like to investigate the seabed, discover species and see how they live underwater, get ready to enjoy!

You can also take pleasant walks between Bellavista Beach (Son Saura), with a path and a beautiful environment where you can take several photos to share on social networks or save for memory. In addition, you can continue your walk along the Camí de Cavalls, following the section 12, Cap d’Artrutx, which is the one that passes through this area. This section is quite flat, and has beautiful views of the cliffs, it also crosses the best coves of Menorca.

You can hike up to the tower by following the trail from the beach to the north, ascending to the top (1.6km route). The views from its 70 m above sea level will allow you to see almost all of this coastal strip. It is privately owned and is adjacent to a pagan farmhouse.

If we want to eat on the beach, since there are no restaurants nearby, the best option is to load the coolers with provisions with which to spend the day without having to travel. However, bear in mind that you will have to carry it for approximately 15-20 minutes until you reach your destination. Depending on the route you choose, it will take more or less time, but it is important to know this because the stretch can become heavier if you are loaded and it is hot.
