Morella Nou

A hidden beach

Morella Nou is located about 15 km from Mahón, on the north coast of Menorca, between Favàritx and the village of Es Grau.

It is a beach of black sand and small rocks that borders a small forest and has two small houses in its northern part and appears divided into 2 coves due to an existing mound in its center. Although this may lead to consider that these are two separate coves, it is normal to consider one and call the whole as the cove of Morella Nou. Its difficult access ensures a low influx of bathers since, even going by sea, it is not advisable to anchor in the area due to the characteristics of its terrain.

Very quiet and hidden, it is a totally unspoiled beach that can be found between the headlands of Mossèn Vives and Ses Piques, and only 1 km south of Cala Tortuga.

Morella Nou, how to get there?

Access to this cove can only be made on foot. The beach is included in the stage 02 of the Camí de Cavalls that goes from Es Grau to the Favàritx lighthouse, so if we want to reach it we can follow this route and take the opportunity to visit all the beaches and points of interest nearby.

To begin the journey we have several options. We can start the journey from the town of Mahón itself (in which case we will travel two stages of the Camí de Cavalls, one of them from Mahón to Es Grau, and the second one from Es Grau to Favàritx).

If, on the other hand, we want to make a simpler crossing, we can do only one of the stages and start the route from Es Grau (from where we will walk north to reach Morella Nou) or from Favàritx (where we will head south towards our cove).

In both cases we can approach our point of origin by road (taking the Me-7 from Mahón and then the Me-5 towards Es Grau; or from the Me-7 follow the signs to Carretera de Favàritx / CF-1 depending on the destination we want to reach) and leave our vehicle in the nearby parking lots that are available, to be able to continue the way on foot from there.

If we prefer to reach them by public transport, bus line 43 departs from Mahón and stops at Favàritx, while line 23* has the same origin, but will take us to Es Grau.

Once we arrive at one of the two destinations, we will see that the indications regarding the stage of the Camí de Cavalls are very clear, and we will see posts along the entire route indicating the stage we are following and the point where we are.

Both traverses are about 3-4 km long and take a total time of about 90 minutes per section.

*This line only offers service during the summer.

Excursions in the area is one of the greatest attractions that can offer the visit to the cove of Morella Nou.

If we follow the Camí de Cavalls, either southbound (starting from Favàritx) or northbound (starting from Es Grau or even from Mahón), we will be able to visit magical places on the north coast of the island.

If we go north we will find, for example, with the views offered by the viewpoints of the Natural Park of s’Albufera des Graus or the Illa d’en Colom on the horizon, or turn off to witness the landscapes offered by places like Cala Tamarells, Cala Rambles (and the defense tower of Sa Torreta) or Cala en Cavaller among others.

And, if we start from the north heading south, we can start from the spectacular view offered by the Favàritx lighthouse and know, in our descent towards Morella Nou, the famous Presili or Tortuga coves.
Both tours will be along the coast and will offer spectacular views of the region and a clear vision of all that the north of the island has to offer.

How to get to Morella Nou by boat?

We can also choose to reach Morella Nou by boat, but we must remember that, if we approach it by boat, it is not advisable to anchor near the cove due to the unfavorable characteristics of the terrain.

To make the approach to the cove we will have to leave with our boat from the port of Mahón in SE direction leaving the dock to starboard. We will continue through the port until we reach the open sea (up to Punta de Sant Carles).

At this point, we will leave the San Carlos lighthouse to starboard, and continue to port along the coast (heading NE). We will pass La Mola and Punta de S’Espero, to advance in a NW direction (always sailing with the coast to port).

We will pass Cap Negre, Punta de Sa Galera and, finally, Punta de sa Cudia. On the port side we will see an inlet that leads to Es Grau and in front we will have Illa d’en Colom. We will have to overcome it leaving it on the port side and we will continue in direction to overcome the Cap de Mossen Vives and the Escull den Tortuga.

After passing both, we will position ourselves towards the SW and we will see the Morella Nou cove from the bow of the boat.
